September Yogi of the Month - Jena Baird

Balance, I think of it like balance [in] lifestyle. In yoga, we talk about it physically, but how can we do it in everything? From our relationships to hanging out, having fun, to enjoying hobbies and passions, to work, and putting all of that into balance.

September Yogi of the Month

Jena Baird

by Alicia Hammond

There is no better yogi to honor at the onset the Yogi of the Month program than friend of Two Moons Cellars, Jena Baird. Jena loves connecting to the Central Coast, an area that she considers her backyard after growing up and planting her roots in the community. Jena combines her work and her joy as the owner of Dharma Yoga Loft, where she also teaches. After a recommendation from her mother to try yoga, Jena took a class in college found her place on the mat. Trained in traditional Ashtangya Yoga, Jena has moved her yoga into many spaces in her life, teaching classes that span from yin yoga, to hot power yoga, to stand up paddleboard yoga. Jena leads each yoga class with warmth, openness, and a joy that is reflected in each movement she makes.  Her classes have something to offer for every yogi, from a fresh beginner to a seasoned warrior.

Jena balances her work and joy with her other essentials: time with family and friends, and giving back to the community. In her early twenties, Jena prioritized giving back by travelling to Nicaragua and spearheading projects to support their livelihoods.  “I remember the street I was on, and I was just thinking to myself, to give back. I remember when I return… to Nicaragua, I am going to give back… We learned what the needs were and really worked with the locals.”  She was able to raise funds for 10 people to go to college for a year, distributed clothes to the needy, and helped entrepreneurs with small projects that helped their businesses thrive. “One guy just needed his sewing machine fixed.  He didn’t have enough money to get it fixed so he could keep working… we funded people to keep their businesses going. We knew it would keep giving back to them.”

Jena extends her passion for generosity locally by hosting yearly basket-filling parties for homeless people living on the Central Coast, making sure her three daughters are involved in this process. She also provides scholarships to people who share her passion for yoga, but can’t afford the sometimes prohibitive costs involved in a yoga studio membership. “We always try to reach out that way.”

Jena also leads regular retreats to fabulous destinations such as South Lake Tahoe, Costa Rica, and Avila Beach! “Being in nature and travelling really lights me up,” Jena glows when asked about her joys.
